African Synodality Initiative

For a synodal African Church

African Synodality Initiative

Who we are...

The African Synodality Initiative (ASI) is a partnership between

The Jesuit Conference of Africa and Madagascar (JCAM), the Symposium of Episcopal Conferences of Africa & Madagascar (SECAM) and the Association of Member Episcopal Conferences in Eastern Africa (AMECEA).

ASI fulfils its goal by developing informative media productions, organising webinars that support the formation of the faithful, and convening various groups to reflect critically on synodality from an African perspective.

Synodality Vision Statements

Following listening and discernment sessions that ASI facilitated, two vision statements on synodality were produced titled: A Vision of Synodality Rooted in an African Ecclesial Context and A Life-Giving Vision of Synodality from African Consecrated Women.

Synodality E-Books

Members of the ASI Theological Working Group developed reflections on some key synodality themes from an African perspective, which have been published as A Pocket Companion to Synodality: Voices from Africa.

Other Resources Downloads

The African Synodality Initiative has developed resources for reflection as we journey together towards a synodal church. The resources are developed for a wide audience. In this section you can download e-books, vision statements and more resources done specifically on the Synod on Synodality in the Universal Church.

ASI Plans The Journey Ahead

As a member of the Synod Continental Phase Task Force, ASI is supporting SECAM in carrying out its continental phase activities. During the second synod continental stage (September 2022 – March 2023), the listening from the previous diocesan stage will be deepened with the aim of better concretising the insights and overall vision from a continental perspective.
