Nairobi, Kenya | 20 August 2025 - The Jesuit Conference of Africa and Madagascar (JCAM) is pleased to announce a significant new appointment to strengthen its commitment to ecological justice and the care of our common home.

In a recent communication, the President of JCAM, Fr. José Minaku, SJ, officially appointed Fr. Daniel M. Mutale, SJ, of the Jesuit Southern Africa Province (SAP) to a dual role critical for the Society’s environmental mission. Fr. Mutale, will serve as both the Africa Representative in the Global Ignatian Advocacy Network (GIAN) for Ecojustice and the Coordinator of the JCAM Ecology Thematic Working Group.

This appointment, endorsed by his provincial, Fr. Leonard Chiti, SJ, underscores the Jesuit commitment to strategic, collaborative action on pressing global issues. The role will involve close coordination with the global Ecojesuit coordinator, Fr. John Kennedy, SJ, and the Social Justice and Ecology Secretariat (SJES) in Rome.

The Global Ignatian Advocacy Network (GIAN) serves as a vital framework that unites Jesuit institutions and partners worldwide, amplifying their collective voice for systemic change. Through strategic partnerships, resource sharing, and coordinated regional initiatives, GIAN works to advance justice, solidarity, and environmental stewardship on a global scale.

In his role as the Africa Representative in GIAN Ecojustice, Fr. Mutale, will act as the essential liaison between JCAM and the global Ecojesuit network. Key responsibilities will include: Participating actively in global meetings and initiatives; ensuring African perspectives and realities are integral to the global Ecojustice discourse; and fostering communication and synergy across the Jesuit provinces and works in Africa and Madagascar.

Concurrently, as the Coordinator of the JCAM Ecojustice Thematic Working Group, Fr. Mutale, will be tasked with:Leading and animating the group’s work in alignment with JCAM priorities and the Universal Apostolic Preferences; supporting provincial delegates and Jesuit works engaged in Ecojustice initiatives; Promoting advocacy, networking, and collaboration within and beyond Jesuit institutions; and facilitating the exchange of best practices, resources, and opportunities for formation and action.

Expressing confidence in the appointment, the JCAM leadership stated, “We are confident that Fr. Mutale’s contribution will enrich both the regional and global efforts in promoting ecological justice as part of our shared mission of reconciliation with creation.”
