The transition ceremony for the new leadership at the Jesuit Justice and Ecology Network Africa (JENA) was marked by a profound sense of gratitude and renewed commitment to the organization’s mission.
Fr. Charles Chilufya, SJ, the outgoing director, expressed his profound gratitude for the opportunity to lead JENA in promoting African social justice initiatives aligned with the mission of the Society of Jesus and the Church. Reflecting on his tenure, he highlighted the significant impact made in the service of faith and the promotion of justice. He underscored that his unwavering dedication to the mission was the driving force behind the growth of the Justice and Ecology Office (JEO) and the JENA Network.
Fr. Rampe Hlobo, SJ, the newly appointed director, expressed his heartfelt gratitude for the warm welcome he received upon taking on this crucial role. He conveyed his deep enthusiasm for advancing the foundational initiatives set forth by the Society of Jesus. His commitment was evident in his strong appreciation for the collaborative spirit that characterizes the Africama community. He emphasized the power of teamwork, encouraging the blending of diverse talents and perspectives to amplify the collective impact as JENA embarks on new ventures.
The session was chaired by Fr. Jose Minaku, SJ, the President of The Jesuit Conference of Africa and Madagascar (JCAM), who, in the opening prayer, emphasized the importance of spiritual reflection in supporting the work of JCAM personnel. This moment of contemplation was intended to foster a sense of unity among the community members in their collective mission.
Following the speeches that resonated throughout the room, Father Minaku facilitated a symbolic leadership transition. With deliberate intent, he directed both Directors, Father Charles and Father Rampe, to change their seating arrangements at the table.
Sitting with the JENA staff on his left, Father Charles rose and gracefully relocated to the opposite side of the table, permitting Father Rampe to assume his former position. This act represented a physical shift and a transition in leadership and responsibility within JENA.
The closing prayer was a powerful call to renewal and dedication to the relentless pursuit of justice and peace. This call motivated everyone to work with determination for a more equitable and just world. In recognition of Fr. Chilufya's seven years of devoted service, the Africama Team celebrated with a farewell cake.
As we extend our best wishes to Fr. Chilufya in his upcoming ministry, we embrace Fr. Rampe Hlobo with optimism, ready to support his leadership as we collectively pursue the core objectives of service of faith and the promotion of justice.

Often it is easier to send a donation to an office within your own country and Fr Paul can advise on how that might be done. In some countries this kind of giving can also be recognised for tax relief and the necessary receipts will be issued.
