A seasoned Jesuit leader with extensive international experience and a profound dedication to Ignatian education, Fr. Gómez will guide the global online community into its next chapter of growth and collaboration.
The announcement was made with great joy and gratitude, highlighting Fr. Gómez’s unique qualifications. "Fr Hugo brings to this role a wealth of leadership experience, pastoral sensitivity, and a deep commitment to Jesuit education," stated Fr. Jimmy Bartolo, S.J., Secretary of Fr. General for Secondary and Pre-Secondary Education. "He also brings valuable international experience and a clear commitment to forming educators through Ignatian spirituality, helping communities grow in both identity and innovation. His work reflects a deep belief in the power of networks built on trust and shared learning across cultures."
Fr. Gómez currently serves as Rector (President) of Colegio San Pedro Claver in Bucaramanga, Colombia. He previously held the presidency of the Asociación de Colegios Jesuitas de Colombia (ACODESI), the Jesuit School Network of Colombia. In these leadership capacities, he has forged robust institutional relationships, spearheaded key educational initiatives, and provided steadfast accompaniment to educators in their mission.
He will succeed Dave Smith, who has led Educate Magis with dedication for the past two years. During his tenure, Smith was instrumental in developing the Educate Magis Apostolic Plan, a strategic roadmap shaped in collaboration with a global task force representing all regions. Smith will continue in his role through the end of the year to ensure a seamless transition.
Upon assuming his duties, Fr. Gómez will be based at the Educate Magis headquarters in Galway, Ireland. He will work closely with the Secretariat for Education, the Educate Magis team, and regional and provincial delegates worldwide to continue strengthening the global community and deepening the shared mission of Jesuit education.
