Father Arturo Sosa has appointed Father John Kobina Ghansah as the next Provincial Superior of the North-West Africa Province.

John Ghansah, aged 59, entered the Jesuit Novitiate, Benin City, Nigeria, in 1984. He studied Philosophy at St. Pierre Canisius Institute in Kimwenza-Kinshasa, DRC, now the Faculty of Philosophy of the Loyola University of Congo. After regency in Ghana, he studied Theology at Hekima College in Nairobi, Kenya. Afterwards, he earned a Licentiate in Sacred Theology from Weston School of Theology, now Boston College School of Theology and Ministry, in Newton, Massachusetts, United States of America. In 1996, he was ordained as a priest in Tema, Ghana. After some years of ministry, he returned to the USA, and obtained a Doctorate in Moral Theology also from the Weston School of Theology, now Boston College School of Theology and Ministry.

Over several years, John has served in divers ministries: as an assistant novice master in Nigeria and later as parish priest of St. Anthony parish, Nungua-Accra,Ghana, and a part-time lecturer at St. Paul's Seminary. After tertianship in Baltimore, USA, he made his final vows in 2008. He then served as Formation Assistant of the ANW Province, Novice Master, and Rector of Hekima College in Nairobi, Kenya. Since 2019, he has been the Socius to the Provincial of the ANW Province as well as the Superior of St. Ignatius House (the Provincial’s Residence), Lagos, Nigeria.

John is interested in liturgy and Ignatian spirituality and has offered numerous retreats and workshops in many countries. He is the Procurator of the ANW Province at the upcoming Congregation of Procurators, which will take place in Loyola, Spain, in May of this year.

John will begin his new mission as ANW Provincial on the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul, 29 June 2023.
