FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE | 9 OCTOBER 2025
NAIROBI, KENYA – The Jesuit Conference of Africa and Madagascar (JCAM) issues this statement following our recent Jesuit Justice and Ecology Network Africa (JENA) Assembly, held in Antananarivo, Madagascar.
During our recent Jesuit Justice and Ecology Network Africa (JENA) Assembly held in Antananarivo, we, the members of the Jesuit Conference of Africa and Madagascar (JCAM), witnessed first-hand the suffering and hardship faced by the people of Madagascar.
Beyond the planned discussions and reflections of our Assembly, we were deeply moved and affected by the reality around us — including the visible signs of distress, the protests along the road to and from the airport, and the lingering smell of teargas in the streets.
These were not distant events. They were a stark reminder of the pressing need for justice, dignity, and peace for the Malagasy people. As Jesuits and collaborators committed to the service of faith and the promotion of justice, we stand in unwavering solidarity with the people of Madagascar.
We urge the government and all stakeholders to listen attentively and compassionately to the voices of their citizens, especially those crying out for the most basic of services: access to clean water, healthcare, education, and economic opportunities. These are not luxuries—they are fundamental human rights and the foundation of a dignified life.
We pray for the Malagasy people and commit ourselves to walking alongside them in their struggle for justice and human dignity. May peace, dialogue, and compassion guide all leaders and citizens alike, so that together a more just and hopeful future for Madagascar can be built.
“Faith and justice walk hand in hand. To serve the poor is to serve Christ himself.”

If you wish to make a donation by direct bank transfer please contact Fr Paul Hamill SJ treasurer@jesuits.africa. Fr Paul will get in touch with you about the best method of transfer for you and share account details with you. Donations can be one-off gifts or of any frequency; for example, you might wish to become a regular monthly donor of small amounts; that sort of reliable income can allow for very welcome forward planning in the development of the Society’s works in Africa and Madagascar.
Often it is easier to send a donation to an office within your own country and Fr Paul can advise on how that might be done. In some countries this kind of giving can also be recognised for tax relief and the necessary receipts will be issued.
