June 16th, 2025 – Kangemi, Kenya - In solidarity with the rest of the continent, Saint Joseph Development Programmes (SJDP) in Kangemi, Kenya, joined the celebration of African Child Day 2025, held under the poignant theme: “Planning and Budgeting for Children’s Rights: Progress Since 2010.”
The day served not only as a commemoration but also as a call to action, to reflect on the strides made in upholding children's rights and to recommit to building a better future for Africa's youngest citizens.
A special highlight of this year’s celebration was the visit by Fr. Kizito Kiyimba SJ, Provincial of the Eastern Africa Jesuit Province (AOR). His presence brought inspiration and renewed commitment to SJDP's mission of serving vulnerable children and families. Fr. Kizito spent meaningful time with the staff, listening attentively to their experiences, challenges, and aspirations for the work they do. Conversations focused on enhancing program effectiveness, strengthening child protection frameworks, and ensuring that children’s needs remain central in institutional planning and resource allocation.
Fr. Kizito also took the opportunity to meet and interact with the children involved in the Upendo Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC) Programmes. With warmth and empathy, he spoke to the children about the power of education, the importance of self-belief, and the resilience required to navigate life’s challenges. His message was simple but profound: “Your dreams are valid, and your future matters.” For the children, it was a moment of encouragement and affirmation—an assurance that they are seen, heard, and valued.
Later, alongside Fr. James Mugwe SJ, Executive Director of SJDP, Fr. Kizito engaged with students and staff at Saint Joseph Secondary School, reinforcing the importance of quality education as a cornerstone of human dignity and social transformation.
This year’s theme encouraged stakeholders to examine the progress made since 2010 in securing the rights of African children. While achievements were acknowledged, there was also a sober recognition of the work that lies ahead. The visit by the Provincial underscored the need for collaboration, community involvement, and accountable leadership to drive sustainable change.
At its core, African Child Day is a reminder that meaningful development begins with intentional investment in the well-being of children. At SJDP, this commitment is lived out daily through comprehensive programs that provide education, nutrition, psychosocial support, and advocacy.
As the celebrations concluded, the message was clear: children must not be an afterthought in our systems, they must be the starting point. Planning and budgeting with children in mind is not only a matter of justice but a moral imperative.
With hope and determination, Saint Joseph Development Programmes reaffirms its dedication to walking with children, championing their rights, and creating environments where they can thrive in dignity and peace.
