The 73rd Plenary Assembly of the Jesuit Conference of Africa and Madagascar (JCAM), held at AFRICAMA House in Nairobi, Kenya, from 21 to 25 October 2026, brought together Major Superiors and leaders of the Society of Jesus to reflect on one of the most pressing questions facing the Conference today: how to ensure a coherent, collaborative, and future-oriented vision of Jesuit formation.

Drawing on the working document, Towards a Formation Vision for JCAM, participants engaged in prayerful discernment and strategic reflection on the current realities and future needs of formation in Africa and Madagascar.

At the heart of the plenary was the recognition that the growing vitality of the Society in Africa and Madagascar presents both opportunities and responsibilities. As the number of vocations continues to increase, so too does the need for stronger collaboration among Provinces, greater investment in formation structures, and a shared understanding of the mission and identity that Jesuit formation seeks to cultivate.

The assembly reflected deeply on the various stages of formation, from vocation promotion and novitiate through philosophy, regency, theology, tertianship, and ongoing formation. Participants examined both the strengths and challenges of existing formation programmes and explored ways of fostering greater collaboration among the Common Formation Centres across the Conference.

A major focus of the discussions was the development of a shared formation vision rooted in the Jesuit tradition and responsive to contemporary realities. Delegates considered how formation can better prepare future Jesuits to serve in a rapidly changing world marked by technological advancement, ecological challenges, cultural diversity, and the needs of vulnerable communities. The discussions underscored the importance of forming men who are spiritually grounded, intellectually competent, emotionally mature, and deeply committed to the mission of reconciliation and justice.

Another significant theme was the formation of formators themselves. Participants emphasised that quality formation depends on qualified and well-supported formators who can accompany young Jesuits throughout the different stages of their journey. Proposals were explored to strengthen the identification, preparation, and ongoing support of formators across the Conference, while encouraging greater interprovincial collaboration and the sharing of resources.

The plenary also addressed the well-being of those in formation, including psycho-spiritual accompaniment, safeguarding, and responses to emerging challenges affecting young religious. These conversations reflected a broader commitment to creating healthy and supportive environments in which individuals can grow in freedom, discernment, and fidelity to their vocation.

Beyond formation, the assembly received updates on several Conference initiatives, including the renewal of the JCAM Apostolic Plan, developments in higher education and formation centres, and other strategic priorities shaping the future of Jesuit ministry in the region.

The plenary received with deep sadness the news of the death of Fr. Fratern Masawe, SJ, General Counsellor ad providentiam to Father General in Rome. In the wake of this loss, Father General Arturo Sosa was unable to attend the JCAM Plenary Assembly as originally planned. The delegates expressed their heartfelt condolences to Father General and the Society at the General Curia, to the Jesuits of AOR, and to Fr. Masawe's family and loved ones. Entrusting him to the mercy of God, they prayed that he may rest in peace and that perpetual light may shine upon him.

Despite happening at a time of this loss, the 73rd JCAM Plenary Assembly stands as an important milestone in the Conference's ongoing journey, reaffirming its collective commitment to forming companions of Jesus prepared to serve the Church and society with competence, generosity, and hope.

As the plenary concluded, a clear conviction emerged that the future of Jesuit formation in Africa and Madagascar is a shared responsibility. By moving from common concerns to common commitments, the Conference seeks to strengthen collaboration among Provinces and ensure that future generations of Jesuits are equipped to respond generously and creatively to God's call in today's world.

Major Superiors also met the Jesuits and Collaborators working in various ministries within the conference.
