ROME – In the wake of the global Meeting of Major Superiors that concluded on October 26, the Jesuit Conference of Africa and Madagascar (JCAM) 70th bi-annual plenary meeting commenced this week, gathering the leaders who serve the Society of Jesus across Africa.

The first session of the meeting was honoured by the presence of the Superior General of the Society of Jesus, Father Arturo Sosa, S.J., underscoring the importance of the Africa and Madagascar apostolates within the universal Jesuit mission.

This strategic plenary brings together the leadership of all seven provinces within the JCAM:

Fr. Rigobert Kyungu, S.J. – Central Africa (ACE); Fr. John Ghansah, S.J. – North-West Africa (ANW); Fr. Mathieu Ndomba, S.J. – West Africa (AOC) (Outgoing), accompanied by the newly appointed Fr. Jean-Luc Enyegue, S.J.; Fr. Kizito Kiyimba, S.J. – Eastern Africa (AOR); Fr. Jocelyn Rabeson, S.J. – Madagascar (MDG); Fr. Fabien Gasigwa, S.J. – Rwanda-Burundi (RWB); and Fr. Leonard Chiti, S.J. – Southern Africa (SAP).

The superiors are being accompanied in their deliberations by the Conference President, Fr. José Minaku, S.J. Also present are Father General's Regional Assistant for Africa, Fr. Fratern Masawe, S.J. (outgoing), the Director of Communications in Rome, Fr. Chukwuyenum Afiawari, S.J. (who is currently acting as Regional Assistant for Africa) and the Socius of JCAM , Fr. John the Baptist Anyeh-Zamcho, S.J.

A significant feature of their time in Rome was a dedicated session between the JCAM Major Superiors and their counterparts from the Jesuit Conference of European Provincials (JCEP). This inter-conference dialogue highlights a growing emphasis on global collaboration and partnership in addressing shared mission challenges and opportunities.

The JCAM plenary follows the landmark global meeting that gathered Jesuit leaders from around the world. The discussions in Rome are expected to focus on translating the universal themes of that gathering—such as the Universal Apostolic Preferences, mission collaboration, and vocational promotion—into a concrete pastoral plan for the specific contexts of Africa and Madagascar.

Jesuits and their partners across the continent are invited to pray for the fruitfulness of these discussions and for the guidance of the Holy Spirit as these leaders deliberate on the future of the Society's mission in this dynamic and vital part of the world.
