Father Arturo Sosa, SJ, Superior General of the Society of Jesus, has appointed Father Ricardo da Silva, SJ, as the new editor of the Society’s annual magazine, the Annuario. The appointment takes effect in January 2026.

Father da Silva brings extensive media experience to the role.

Since October 2020, he has been an associate editor at America Media, the Jesuit media ministry founded in 1909 and acclaimed for its authoritative coverage of Church affairs, culture, and politics, where he is a producer of several podcasts, including the weekly "Inside the Vatican" and "Preach: The Catholic Homilies Podcast," which he also hosts under a $1.25 million Lilly Endowment Inc. grant to support compelling preaching across Christian churches. He is also a producer of the seasonal "Hark! The Stories Behind Our Favorite Christmas Carols."

At America, he also reports on Vatican affairs and has provided expert analysis for media outlets during major Church events, notably his coverage of the Synod on Synodality and the papal transition following Pope Francis' death, through the conclave and Pope Leo XIV's election. His reporting has helped both the Catholic faithful and the wider public navigate these historic developments. He has also produced and hosted several video productions featured on America's YouTube channel.

Beyond his media work, Father da Silva serves as associate pastor at the Church of St. Francis Xavier, a Jesuit parish in downtown Manhattan known for its outreach to those at the margins of the Church's welcome.

His appointment as editor represents a natural progression for someone whose career has consistently bridged journalism and ministry. He joined America shortly after completing a Master of Science in Journalism at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, where he was a 2019–2020 Pulitzer African Fellow.

Born in Portugal, he emigrated to South Africa as a child and was raised there. He entered the Society of Jesus on September 7, 2007, in the South African Region (then dependent on the British Province), moving to Birmingham, U.K., for novitiate — beginning a formation journey that would span three continents. Before ordination, his theological studies took him to Brazil, where he studied at the Jesuit Faculty of Philosophy and Theology in Belo Horizonte. During this period, he also served as director of communications for the Jesuit Migrant and Refugee Service (SJMR) in Brazil. He was ordained to the priesthood on July 31, 2021, in Johannesburg.

Father da Silva's earlier formation included philosophical studies at Heythrop College, University of London, and regency as a university chaplain in Johannesburg, serving both the University of the Witwatersrand and the University of Johannesburg. Before joining the Jesuits, he combined studies in communications, journalism, and public relations with work in sales, print marketing, and later online marketing and brand management.

Throughout his Jesuit formation, he has ministered alongside remarkably diverse communities, including high school and university students, older adults, migrants, refugees and asylum seekers, persons with disabilities, and people experiencing homelessness.

His experience at America Media, combined with his proven commitment to social justice and media apostolates and his broad international experience within the Society, positions him well to guide the Annuario as a publication that not only records the life of the Society of Jesus but also critically and compassionately engages with the world it serves.

The appointment signals an exciting new chapter for the Annuario, promising a publication that is both professionally vibrant and deeply rooted in the pastoral and social justice priorities of the contemporary Jesuit mission.
