What began as a humanitarian response to the devastation of civil war has matured into a multifaceted mission of faith, education, healthcare, and human flourishing, a living testament to the power of hope in a nation that has known profound suffering.
The Jesuit presence in Liberia stands as a vital beacon of hope, grounded in a profound faith in God's presence among the people. Since establishing their presence in the country, the Jesuits have dedicated themselves to a wide range of apostolic ministries that seek to transform individuals and communities. During the devastating civil wars, when millions of people were displaced and social institutions collapsed, the Society of Jesus responded through the Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS). Despite the insecurity that characterised those difficult years, Jesuit personnel remained committed to providing hope through education, psychosocial support, and humanitarian assistance. Between 1992 and 2005, the Jesuit Refugee Service ran internally displaced persons camp schools and provided vocational training and skills acquisition programmes for teachers in all their twelve camps in Bong and Montserrado counties.
The Society of Jesus formally assumed pastoral responsibility for Holy Family Parish in 2007, marking a significant milestone in the Jesuit mission in Liberia. This was a powerful sign that hope can emerge from the ashes of conflict, and that the Jesuits recognised Liberia as a fertile vineyard in need of dedicated labourers. Inspired by the example of Christ, the Jesuits work alongside the Liberian people, bringing hope to those burdened by despair and supporting communities on their journey of healing and renewal. During the 2014 Ebola crisis, which killed hundreds of Liberians and devastated communities, Jesuit personnel remained with the people, offering hope and support. Today, Holy Family Parish on the outskirts of Monrovia's Caldwell neighbourhood serves over five hundred parishioners, nurturing the faith of countless people through spiritual accompaniment, retreats, pastoral care, and guidance rooted in the Ignatian tradition. In 2025, the first Liberian Jesuit and Holy Family parishioner was ordained as a priest, confirming the Jesuits' efforts to inspire local vocations and hope for the future.
The Holy Family Parish Clinic, overseen by the Jesuits, provides affordable healthcare to locals and offers compassionate medical services that support the most marginalized and vulnerable population. Through these ministries, Jesuits have promoted love, care, compassion, and reconciliation, serving others with generosity and faith. The Holy Family Skills Acquisition Center supports the youth by equipping them with the knowledge, skills, and moral values needed to contribute meaningfully to society. Through faithful service and enduring solidarity, the Jesuit presence in Liberia remains a powerful expression of God's love at work in the nation.
Inspired by the Jesuit educational tradition which for more than 480 years has formed leaders of competence, conscience, compassion, and commitment across the world the Society of Jesus over the years discerned that establishing a Jesuit school would be one of its most significant and enduring contributions to Liberia's future. The vision was not simply to create another school, but to establish an institution that would educate the whole person intellectually, spiritually, morally, emotionally, and socially, preparing young Liberians to become responsible citizens and servant leaders capable of transforming their communities.
On 3 December 2020, the Feast of Saint Francis Xavier, the newly built school was officially opened and welcomed its first students. The date and the school's name are both highly significant. By bearing his name, Xavier Jesuit School embraces the same missionary spirit as Saint Francis Xavier. The school's purpose is not only to educate, but also to nurture young individuals who will utilise their knowledge and talents in service to God and humanity. In keeping with the Jesuit philosophy of cura personalis, care for the whole person, students are encouraged to pursue academic excellence while developing integrity, compassion, leadership skills, a sense of justice, and a commitment to serving others throughout their lives.
As Liberia's first Jesuit school, Xavier Jesuit School joins a worldwide educational network that has shaped generations of leaders for nearly five centuries. In just six years, Xavier Jesuit School has become a compelling example of the transformative impact of Jesuit education in Liberia. Established to provide accessible, holistic, and values-based Catholic education, the school has grown into one of the country's emerging centres of excellence in elementary and junior high education. Today, Xavier Jesuit School serves approximately one hundred students from Kindergarten through Grade Seven and employs more than thirty academic and administrative staff dedicated to providing an exceptional learning experience.
Despite being a relatively young institution facing daunting funding challenges for infrastructure, the school has quickly earned a reputation for academic excellence, disciplined learning, and values-based education. The school's achievements reflect the strength of its mission. As more Liberians join the Jesuits, the parish community flourishes and the school thrives, the Jesuits have sown the seed of faith in Liberia. It is God's work, and He will ensure it grows to become the largest of all plants.
