The Very Reverend Father Arturo Sosa, SJ, the Superior General of the Society of Jesus, has appointed Fr. Chukwuyenum Afiawari (ANW) as Assistant ad Providentiam of the Society of Jesus. The appointment follows the death of Fr. Fratern Masawe, who served as Regional Assistant for Africa and Madagascar and Assistant ad Providentiam.

The appointment was made in accordance with the procedure outlined in Complementary Norm 376 of the Society. It followed consultations with the three Assistants ad Providentiam currently in office and the Major Superiors of the Society.

Fr. Afiawari brings to the role years of experience in Jesuit formation, education, leadership and communications. He has served as Novice Director in Nigeria, Rector of Arrupe College in Harare, Zimbabwe, and Provincial of the Jesuit North-West Africa Province.

Since 2023, he has been at the General Curia in Rome, where he serves as Director of Communications.

The role of Assistant ad Providentiam places Fr Afiawari at the heart of the Society's governance, supporting the Father General in the exercise of his universal responsibility for the Society. His breadth of experience—from the formation of young Jesuits to the leadership of a Province and, most recently, the coordination of the Society's communications—equips him well for this new mission.

The appointment comes as the Society continues to mourn the loss of Fr. Fratern Masawe, whose faithful service as Regional Assistant for Africa and Madagascar and as Assistant ad Providentiam is remembered with gratitude. Fr Masawe's dedication to the mission of the Society, particularly in the service of the Church in Africa and Madagascar, leaves a lasting legacy.

We entrust Fr Afiawari to the prayers of all the Jesuits in the Society as he takes up this new responsibility. May the Lord grant him wisdom, courage and consolation in his service to the universal Society and to the Church.
