About AJAN.

The Society of Jesus, is a nearly 500-year-old Roman Catholic order of priests and brothers which lives its global mission of service in working for the “greater glory of God” through a variety of works, including parishes, schools, and social centres. AJAN is part of that mission as a faith-based organization that promotes networking and support for Jesuits involved in integral youth development, as well as prevention and care for those affected by HIV/AIDS across sub-Saharan Africa and Madagascar. AJAN is the Office of Health and Youth Development of JCAM with the mission of coordinating existing Jesuit initiatives and promoting new ones in collaboration with our various partners.

Created as an effort to respond to HIV, AIDS and other public health issues in Africa, AJAN has a Secretariat in Nairobi, Kenya which coordinates 21 Jesuit organizations in 16 countries across the continent. Most of these organisations undertake grassroots activities, mediation, education, programming, research, and advocacy work to reduce the vulnerability of marginalized community members affected by HIV/AIDS. These grassroots activities range from youth formation and education, provision of medical care, psychosocial support, assistance with living expenses for those in need, scholarships, home-based care, and pastoral care.

About AJAN research and communications.

The AJAN secretariat, which runs the JCAM Health, and Youth Development Office provides leadership on public health and youth research, fundraising, network development, as well as communication across various media platforms in order to implement the AJAN Mission and Vision. This is accomplished by:

- Delivering a smart research agenda that increases the profile of the network with actions grounded on public health and advocacy in Africa.

- Supporting the growth of a strong, continental network of Jesuit organizations working towards eradicating HIV/AIDS and its related ills such as stigma, gender-based inequalities, violence, and youth delinquency. Further supporting the growth of Jesuit organizations working to promote integral youth development and education for a healthier and more prosperous planet.

Leading effective external communication and brand awareness, by building organizational communications capacity across the network.

Job Description.

The AJAN Research and Communications Officer will be responsible for the implementation of research and communication initiatives that contribute to the development and support of ongoing AJAN programs, as well as those oriented towards AJAN’s vision and growth towards the future. This will include coordination and oversight of AJAN’s communication and research strategy, as well as its implementation across various media platforms for both an internal and external audience. Included within are the creation and dissemination of research, publications, and documents from and between the AJAN Secretariat and the various field centres. Under the guidance of AJAN Director, the Research and Communications Officer will work in collaboration with the AJAN secretariat team, network members, and partners in various Jesuits conferences and missions across the globe, as well as the wider Church, to promote AJAN’s leadership role in creating an HIV and pandemic-free society and contribution towards youth wellbeing.

Major Responsibilities:

- Design and implement an annual Communications and Research Strategic Plan for AJAN that covers all relevant forums, including print, soft and online media.

- Draw up an annual budget for strategic research and communication in line with AJAN’s strategic plan.

- Develop a relevant list of themes for reflection, items for research and publication, as well as identify potential contributors to the same.

- Liaise with field project managers for dissemination of data and information sharing.

- Source for content, edit, and publish AJAN interim reports as requested by the Director.

- Manage, update, and maintain all AJAN social media accounts (Facebook, twitter, YouTube, etc.)

- Source for content, design, edit and publish the AJAN Annual report.

- Spearhead articles/news items for media, magazine and publish AJANews.

- Coordinate, supervise and ensure that the content of the AJAN website and the AHAPPY application are regularly updated and properly managed.

- Source for content, edit, and publish public statements and messages for important celebrations such as World AIDS Day, International Women’s Day, AIDS Orphans Day, Youth Day, etc.

- Monitor AJAN web statistics and provide regular follow up for maximizing its audience.

- Ensure high quality visual content for communications with professional-quality photos and video editing.

- Design and edit AJAN key messages for IEC materials, publications, and ensure they are printed and produced to a high standard within budget and delivered on time.

- Supervise, manage, and update the AJAN physical and online library and AJAN resource centre (ARC).

- Connect and update link between AJAN website and fields project websites to improve communication flow between the members of the Network.

- Oversee capacity building efforts of the various AJAN field centres and other core staff in the area of communications.

- Evaluate and report on AJAN communications strategy and plan for effectiveness.

- Play an active role in youth training activities with AJAN programmes.

- Perform any other media services and duties as assigned by the management of AJAN.

Education, Qualification, and knowledge.

MA degree in a relevant subject area (such as public heath, international development, communications, or relevant social science) or equivalent work experience.

- Good information technology skills including familiarity with Microsoft applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.)

- Willingness and ability to travel.


Willingness to commit to JCAM Safeguarding policy (available on JCAM website) and to undergo a police background check.


- Knowledge of social media management
