  • Inaugural Graduation Ceremony of Arrupe Jesuit University (AJU) 2019

    May 30, 2019, marked the first Graduation ceremony of Arrupe Jesuit University (AJU), having been certified and accredited by the Zimbabwe Council for Higher Education (ZIMCHE) as a fully registered and chartered university in Zimbabwe on 3 December 2018.

    Named after Father Pedro Arrupe, Superior General of the Society of Jesus from 1965-1983, for the past 26 years, the institution has equipped academics with not only intellectual skills but conscience and compassion inspired by the Catholic Faith as an associate college for the University of Zimbabwe.

    Sous la direction du Père Bienvenu Matazonga, SJ, les scolastiques jésuites de la promotion de troisième année de licence à l’Institut de Théologie de la Compagnie de Jésus à Abidjan - Côte d’Ivoire se sont retirés, du 11 août au 12 septembre 2019 à Yamoussoukro et à Bouaké, pour faire l’expérience spirituelle du traditionnel « mois Arrupe ». Dans la Compagnie de Jésus, le mois Arrupe est une préparation immédiate aux ordres majeurs. C’est une occasion privilégiée de prier, de réfléchir, de se faire diriger afin de donner une réponse mûre, réfléchie et discernée à la vocation sacerdotale.

    The JCAM Formation Assembly has started in a wet Nairobi that has registered more rain at this period of the year than usual. As delegates arrived from across the continent and beyond, some had a lot of difficulties as their flights were cancelled or overbooked. However, by noon on 9 December 2019, all the participants had been registered.

    The Society of Jesus considers formation as “priority of priorities.” Fr. Peter-Hans Kolvenbach developed a set of documents on the various stages, concerns, and objectives of formation in the Society. In 2014, Fr. Adolfo Nicolás launched a programme of renewal of intellectual formation in the Society, with special emphasis on context, content, competencies, and charisms. The Formation Centres in the Conference have initiated programmes of review and revision of their curricula in line with the directives of Fr. Nicolás.

  • Two Catholic universities geared to expand amid Zimbabwe's turmoil

    HARARE, ZIMBABWEArrupe Jesuit University and the Catholic University of Zimbabwe in Harare have been registered with the Zimbabwe Council for Higher Education (ZIMCHE) as full-fledged universities and are now geared to expand their degree offerings as well as open new campuses across the country.

    Jesuit Fr. Gilbert Mardai, pro vice-chancellor for administration at Arrupe Jesuit University — located less than 1 kilometer from the Mount Pleasant campus of the Catholic University of Zimbabwe in Harare — told NCR that the institution was motivated to register as a full-fledged university to meet the needs of young people who are completing secondary and high school education.
