The Secretary of the Social Justice and Ecology Secretariat of the Society of Jesus, Fr Xavier Jeyaraj SJ is among participants in the Jesuits Justice and Ecology Network Africa (JENA) Assembly and Conference. This event has brought together experts along with some Major Superiors, representatives from Jesuit universities and social research centres from more than 15 countries, to discuss ways to deploy and track the implementation of the Universal Apostolic Preferences (UAP).
Fr Jeyaraj SJ, is also a scholar on extractivism and mining and its impact on indigenous people and the environment. He is also a trained social worker, a lawyer and a human rights activist. Early in his career, he taught Sociology at St. Xavier College, Kolkata, India. He then founded the Province Social Action Centre called ‘Udayani’ in 1998 which he developed and led until 2007, working with the most deprived santal tribals and dalits in the slums and villages around Kolkata. He also served as the Secretary for Social apostolate in South Asia for 5 years; developed and initiated the MSW course in St. Xavier’s University, Kolkata before taking over as the Secretary for Social Justice & Ecology for the Society of Jesus in Rome, Italy in June 2017, where he leads and coordinates social apostolate for the entire Society of Jesus.
In the JENA meeting in a presentation to other experts in the field, Fr Jeyaraj SJ highlighted the importance of collaboration and networking not only among Jesuits but with other global networks who are working towards Justice.
