Lagos was new for some of them. It was the first time in Nigeria for others. The intense Lagos traffic and the scorching sun welcomed the treasurers and bursars of JCAM as they made their way to St. Ignatius House, Surulere, Lagos. The house in Surulere was happy to host these companions coming from far and near.
On Sunday, the treasurers and bursars had a night tour of Lagos Island as that was the best time to move around in Lagos to avoid usually heavy traffic. Among other sites, the treasurers drove across the 11km Third Mainland Bridge popularly known as one of the longest bridges in Africa.
The meeting began on Monday 8th April and ended on Friday 12th April 2019. On the first day of the JETRAM meeting, Fr. Chuks Afiawari, SJ, the provincial of the North-West Africa Province welcomed the treasurers and bursars. He also presided over the first eucharistic celebration of the meeting. The JCAM President addressed the treasurers and bursars. After that, each of the provinces and regions in attendance reported on the financial state of their provinces and regions.
On the second day, there were more reports from the provinces and regions. The bursars of the JCAM common houses also reported on the financial state of their respective institutions. The members at the meeting had some time to discuss JCAM financial reporting and JCAM tertianship. On the afternoon of the second day, Fr. Jose de Pablo, the treasurer of the Jesuit Conference of European Provincials (JCEP) reported on the conference. At the end of their afternoon session, the members had an hour of faith sharing which was accompanied by socials.
On the third day of the JESTRAM meeting, the members took the day off to visit Jesuit apostolates in Lagos City. They visited the Divine Physician and St. Luke Catholic Chaplaincy Idi-Araba, Lagos, Christ the King Catholic Church, Ilasamaja, Lagos, St. Francis Catholic Church Idimu, Lagos and finally, St. Francis Catholic Secondary School, Idimu Lagos. When they resumed the meeting on the fourth day, members of the JESTRAM began their session with a presentation and discussion on the state of the Arca Praevisionis. Fr. Michel Ntangu presented “Proposed policy on surpluses/reserves of common houses” then a presentation was also made on the progress of the restructuring in Southern Africa. After assessments of the previous sessions, the JESTRAM meeting came to an end at noontime on Friday 12th April 2019.
