The monthly Faculty mass of the Institut de Théologie de la Compagnie de Jesus (ITCJ, Abidjan) coincided with this year’s Ash Wednesday. A reminder, perhaps, of a communitarian dimension of the 40-day Lenten journey. Through the liturgical readings of the day, songs, the homily of Fr Folifack Aurélien SJ, and the ash-giving ritual, we were reminded that Ash Wednesday is not only a day we begin the penitential season of Lent but also a day in which the Church reminds us of our mortality and dependence on God.
This season of spiritual journey draws our attention to a deeper awareness and practice of prayer, fasting , nd almsgiving. There is no room for passivity in an honest Lent; one enters it with faith and responsibility. It is a journey of daily dying, of spiritual abscission of the dry leaves of our lives, and of hope for pollination at springtime, that is, at Easter. May this Lent be a transformative experience like no other. Let the journey begin!
